The Hyades Cluster is one of the closest and most studied open star clusters to Earth, located about 150 light years away in the constellation Taurus. It’s relatively young, estimated to be around 625 million years old, and spans about 20 light years in diameter. The cluster’s core is densely packed, with stars clustered closely together, creating a brilliant and dynamic stellar neighborhood.
The cluster has a high percentage of binary star systems, many with Orange K and Yellow G stars with stable orbits. These types of stars represent the highest potential for habitable planets.
After arriving in the Hyades cluster, the Hyades expedition ships (the Argos I, Argos II and Argos III) spent decades engaged in a coordinated effort to map and survey sectors of space within the cluster to locate candidate planets for initial colonization.
Stela Mondo ("Star World") was identified as the best candidate containing three systems containing habitable planets in close proximity. A fourth system was later identified and developed following completion of the development of the first colony of Grasond.
Compared to Earth's location within the Orion Spur, the systems in the Hyades cluster, particularly near the dense core, are much closer together than many other regions of space. The distance between the colonies is only a fraction of a light year and can be measured in light hours.
